On Thursday, February 18, 4 artists take over the Salon @ MoAD to play with the implicit/explicit expressions of ethnicity and masculinity.
REWIND:
1955. NEW YORK: Arthur Mitchell made his debut as the first African-American to perform with the New York City Ballet. Performing in all the major ballets of the repertoire and partnered solely with white dancers, Mitchell could not perform these works on commercial television until 1965 and remained the only African-American in the company until 1970.
FAST FORWARD:
2010. SAN FRANCISCO: Black male artists are few in number but large in presence, as companies, choreographers, and spaces jostle to collaborate with those particular artists who embody Blackness and masculinity while offering the air of accessibility.
