Details:
The San Francisco Bay Area, a major player in global urbanism, is in the midst of an explosion of interest in the music culture known as HOUSE.
On December 17, three local choreographers grab hold of their influences to offer wildly unique perspectives on this rhythmic phenomenon.
JOCQUESE (aka: JoQ)
Pose. SYMMETRIC. Pose. GEOMETRIC. Pose. DRAMATIC.
Fast forward + rewind.
Dropping into the complex matrix of what's old is new again, JoQ pushes us full force into the future of Vogue, one of House culture’s most revered + least understood forms.
JoQ believes that every dance style can be Vogue.
This time we’re all invited to the Ball.
Teaming up with DJ Andre to mix the lyrical with the sharp + the energetic with the fluid, JoQ creates dance theater of harmonious abstraction with Vogue as its foundation.
LAUREN (aka: Lauren b.)
New York. SAN FRANCISCO. Detroit. SAN JOSE. Chicago. OAKLAND…
Lauren b. is on a prismatic journey, collecting facets of House culture + pulling them back to her through the kaleidoscopic spirit of the Bay Area.
Advocating LOVE + FREEDOM as inspiration + motivation, Lauren stretches back decades + generations to present the legacy of House from jacking to waacking.
In partnership with DJ Tagnia, Lauren b. calls upon the dual goal of practice + performance to re-interpret the African aesthetics of call & response for the globally-modern House audience.
RASHAD (aka: Soul Nubian)
Who? DANCER as DJ. When? PAST as FUTURE. Why? RITES as RIGHTS…
In an eclectic homage to the history + culture of Afro/Electro/House dance + music, Soul Nubian collaborates with DJ Damon Bell to investigate the rituals of underground dance and layer them with a Pan-African performance aesthetic.
Soul Nubian dives deep into expressionist movement + ancestral kinetic memory, creating a polyrhythmic theater narrative through the synthesis of juxtaposed angles + primal transitions.
Employing the tools of freestyle art + the urban soundscape, Soul Nubian unmasks multiple answers to the question, how can a deeply personal House culture be preserved + not tainted?
