Interludes To Intimacy

see. think. dance. + Motif Performance Group collaborate for the second performative installment of The Intimacy Project™.

"Interludes To Intimacy" is a work for 4 dancers - 2 male, 2 female - 3 African-American, 1 African.

Presented as a conversation between the individual + the collective, the piece unfolds as a collaged response to the questions: What is the Black experience of intimacy? What does it look, sound, feel like? How do we realize healthy emotional + sexual relationships between Black women + Black men?

Utilizing techniques based in contact improvisation + movement narrative, the performance also incorporates Pan-African dance, contemporary American dance, and urban dance forms such as House, Hip-Hop, and Dancehall.

The Intimacy Project™ is an ongoing collaboration between performance artists/ educators who draw creative inspiration from their connection to the African continent and are deeply invested in social change through the re-integration of the mind and the body. By examining the barriers to intimacy amongst those who were once property, The Intimacy Project™ calls upon the historical legacy of slavery on Black minds and bodies as a departure point to uncover solutions for greater honesty and communication across age, gender, class and race.
Motif Performance Group (~Motif: A unit repeated to create visual rhythm~) was founded by artistic director Rashad Pridgen in the Spring of 2008. MPG is an evolving collaboration of dancers and artists who are encouraged to reflect on the human experience through new movement aesthetics, street dance theatre, contemporary ritual and communal soul embodiment. MPG is concerned with presenting work in site specific/unconventional spaces, while continuing to transform the line between audience and performer. MPG is devoted to the global community by the development and presentation of outreach classes, workshops and dance residence's nationally and internationally.
